The story of Clarion in one minute

How do you become an expert in the autonomous car? By making the most of the knowledge acquired in the automobile since the first days of life of this sector!

Indeed, the story of Clarion, at the time Hakusan Wireless Electric Company, then Teikoku Dempa, begins in 1940, when this Japanese company, which was very young at the time, starts producing a new product that makes its breakthrough in the market of moving objects: a car radio. Linking two growing industries, the radio and car industries, Clarion offers its first sound systems for motorists looking for modernity in this post-war development environment.

Clarion makes the choice to specialise in the automobile where it quickly becomes the reference, with, in particular, the "Le Parisien” (The Parisian) model, specially designed in 1951 to equip Renault 4CVs, assembled on the Hino Motors chains near to Tokyo. Faced with the competition of companies such as Philips or Blaupunkt, which are developing at the same time, Clarion is able to prove its expertise in the automotive market and satisfies ever more demanding drivers. Its international expansion is accelerating, notably with the entry into the US market in 1958.

The 1970s and 1980s are a golden age for hi-fi, supported by Clarion, which innovates and allows for the integration of exceptional audio systems into dashboards. The next decade will mark a turning point, with the advent of navigation (Clarion introduces the first voice-guided navigation system in Japan from 1992).

A leading player in the design of built in cameras for many years, Clarion joined the Hitachi group in 2006, finding a new path in the development of driver assistance systems, such as the "Park by Memory" system presented at the CES 2018, which allows a car to memorise a route to park or leave a garage autonomously, for example. Today, the company continues to develop advanced infotainment systems, but targets the future more than ever with the intelligent and autonomous car, the mode of transport of the future.
